Succulents are the go-to choice for many people who want to have a plant in their home but want it to be as easy as possible to take care of. That said, even though succulents are known to be relatively easy to keep alive and looking green, that doesn’t mean that they don’t have any needs for you to consider. One example of this is a String of Turtles Plant. Here is a quick overview of these versatile plants and how you should care for them.
What is a String of Turtles Plant?
Native to Brazil, the String of Turtles Plant is a small succulent known to grow exceptionally well in the Brazilian jungles, where it grows wild and in a well-heated home. They are popular because they are small in size, which means they are ideal for homes with limited space.
Not only this, but they also have a rather fun and unique look. Their turtle shell-shaped leaves are where they get their name.
After around five years, if they are taken good care of, these plants will grow to as large as 12 inches; however, if they stay on the smaller side, this doesn’t mean that you are not doing an excellent job in taking care of them.
How to care for a String of Turtles Plant?
When it comes to the placement of your plant, you will want to make sure that it is placed in a bright spot of your home. Although, you do not want to expose it to complete, direct sunlight. If you do this for an extended period, then there is a good chance you will damage those gorgeous leaves.
Succulents, as a whole, have a specific type of premixed soil that is the best for them to be planted in. However, whilst a true succulent, the String of Turtle Plant does not need this usual soil mix. Instead, you should use organic soil, especially those that are high in peat.
You will often see this type of soil in a seed starting mix. The soil must be as acidic as it can, as this will help stop the pH levels from getting too low; the soil should also be tested regularly.
Another thing to keep in mind is how often you should water your plant. The String of Turtles plan is well known for retaining the moisture it needs, which means that it can suffer from overwatering. Instead, you should aim to keep it moist rather than give it lots of water at once, as you may do with other plants.
One final thing to know about this plant is that if it is not pruned regularly, it can look ragged and unkempt. This means that occasional pruning is the best way to keep it looking the best that it can, getting rid of any unwanted growth or dying strings, and allowing for new growth to come through.
If you take good care of your plant, you can expect it to have a long and happy life. Not only brightening up any space that it calls its home, but also delivering clean air around your home too.
