How to Pick a Plant Pot for Your Plant and Your Home

It doesn't matter who you are, the home that you have is vitally important. Your home keeps you safe and warm and gives you protection when you need it most. You may not think that plants have the exact needs, but just like us, plants need the perfect home, the perfect plant pot to live in and grow in.

How to Pick a Plant Pot for Your Plant and Your Home

Houseplant Pots

So, as a responsible plant owner, you need to make sure that you choose the right pot for your plant to live in. If you want to make sure that you are making the right choice? Here are some of the main things to keep in mind.

Houseplant Pot - Size

The main thing you need to think about with potted plants is the size of the pot you have your plant in. It is a good idea to try and buy a pot that is the same size as the pot that it comes in, as this will be enough space for them.

That said, if you are worried that your plant is going to grow, you will want to buy a pot around two inches bigger than the pot you have. This will ensure that your plant has space to grow, but it will not be swamped.

Houseplant Pot - Drainage

One of the key things that your potted plant is going to need is proper drainage. If a plant has roots that are sat in stagnant water, then it will likely be unhappy and may rot and die! and no one wishes that for their favourite plants. This means that you need to consider how your plant will drain. Of course, the easiest thing to do is make sure that your pot has drainage holes.

If you find that your pot doesn't have any holes and you want to make sure it still drains appropriately. Then you can build in your own drainage; this only needs rocks at the bottom of your pot and activated charcoal. This will help drainage and limit the chance that your roots will rot if they are sat in water.

Houseplant Pot - Material

When it comes to materials for your potted plant, much of your decision will be down to what style you like. However, this is not the only reason to consider different materials. Terracotta pots and ceramic pots are porous, which means that they help the plants to drain out effectively.

Plastic may be okay for a temporary measure but should not be used long-term, if at all possible, as they do not allow your plant to breathe as it may in an alternative type of pot. That said, you should always check the particular plant you want to grow, as you may find certain materials that the plant requires to thrive.
