Fat Boy likes
Medium light: He prefers some shade but will tolerate full sun.
Temperature: He likes warm, humid environments inside. He won't tolerate frost.
Water: He prefers evenly moist soil with good drainage in warm seasons - never soggy soil. He hates wet feet and stores moisture in his petioles.
Humidity: Medium - High (40 - 60%).
Soil: Thrives in organic matter rich soil, so use plenty of leafy mulch and sterile compost. This also helps the soil retain moisture. Also mixing sand or using orchid bark, charcoal, peat and Perlite is a good way to improve drainage.
Feed: Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser from the start of spring each year to autumn when growth slows down.
Tips: They love being misted and it helps them stay fresh and clean. You can even give the leaves a sponge wipe to make them look fresh and shiny. Just watch out for bacterial infections which spread due to moisture.

About Philodendron Fat Boy
Philodendron martianum is endemic to (exclusively found in) Brazil and was described to science in 1899 by botanist Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (1844 to 1930). Martianum also goes by some interesting names like Flask Philodendron or Fat Boy because of his super thick petioles. Adult specimens of Philodendron martianum grow in a rosette form (similar to the arrangement of a rose's petals) and are capable of growing quite large. The species grows as an epiphyte on the branches of trees as well as a terrestrial species provided the host tree falls. He has large pointed green leaves with a swollen base. Excellent for tropical gardens or as a house plant. The leaves are stiff, leathery and well-formed. Suits apartments or homes of any size. Best for indoors, a warm bright bathroom or hallway.
